About the 2nd Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale (JCCB#2)

21 Dec 12 – 20 Jan 13

CRAFTING INDENTITY

These past three years, the practice of creating contemporary ceramic works has been engaged in correspondences with psychoanalytic experiences, memories, histories, and socio-cultural narrations. Reflecting upon this inclination/tendency, we can even say that contemporary ceramics has come to represent various discourses outside of its immediate issues relating to the medium and complex creative techniques; ranging from discourses of globalization, localization, urban issues, gender issues, spirituality, etc. Contemporary ceramics has diversified its presentation into a variety of structures and degrees of repetitions in size, cadence, and rhythms. This tendency/inclination demonstrates a new way for ceramists to expand their ceramics medium into various possibilities of forms and presentation techniques. Contemporary ceramics does not stop at one particular construct and end there.

The aim of the Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale II, through the theme “Crafting Identity”, is to attempt to engage in a discourse about identity. “Crafting” refers to the practice of creating works using one’s craftsmanship abilities. Here, “Crafting Identity” is intended to mean any craft practice exercised to create an “identity”. On one hand, various interesting details can be observed from the process of transforming clay into numerous forms; and on the other hand, this transformation can demonstrate the diversity of aesthetic orientations. The theme “Crafting Identity” represents an attempt to emphasize upon the growth and development of many new identities that emerge from their unlimited creative practices. As it is with the nature of art’s creative practices to always create differences, so will ceramic art beget diversities and differences as well. Thus, within this particular discourse, ceramics can also be seen as a cultural object born from the way it is created.

In considering the aforementioned correspondence as phenomenon, as well as the way we read various transformative ideas, forms, and techniques—from a ceramic object’s beginning as monomaterial entity into a polymaterial one—Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale II will have arrived at its mission, that is to demonstrate various issues regarding identity through ceramics as its medium.

In addition to identity issues regarding the forms and techniques of ceramics, the issues of identity within the curatorial of “Crafting Identity”’ can be specified further. Issues range from identity and its connection with discourses of spirituality, discourses of body and gender, discourses of art and memory, the culture of consumption (consumer culture), Its relation to production in work culture. historical reference, postcolonial condition, diaspora experience, locality and globality; and urban/industrial experience.

Tema Kuratorial

CRAFTING INDENTITY
