Handiwirman Saputra

Handiwirman Saputra studied art at Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta. Together with his friends in Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela, he began his art process. His name is quite prominent in the world of Indonesian and regional fine art as well as his friends in Kelompok Jendela. The art development after the 1990s in Indonesia, particularly in Yogyakarta, was dominated by the tendency of bringing up social and political issues. Very dominant, they were presented with different tendencies, bringing issues of art back to aesthetic problems normally neglected at that time. Handiwirman does some installations, paintings, and three-dimensional objects. His artworks usually show regular objects that look ambiguous, not clearly informing the object’s identity, such as a lump of cotton he paints floating without any background. For the last one year, Handi has been working on objects that seem to have inverted skins revealing the inside part of the skins and he manipulates characters of the surface resembling human skin. The objects in his artworks are daily objects or even parts of them. In fact, this is his first time working with ceramic medium to be shown in an exhibition. He does the same manipulation on his artworks as what he usually does with resin medium for other objects. The objects that he makes are similar to objects made of inverted cloth or leather to show the inside part of it. Handiwirman’s artworks show a process of creation originated from the intimacy of interactions with objects, processing and re-creating the surface and forms. Therefore, he has sensitivity in techniques and forms associated with their attached meanings.
